Volvo Ocean Race 2009


Sword Event Guard International is proud to announce that they have been appointed as the provider of security services to the Galway Stopover Festival of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 is the world's premier yacht race for professional racing crews. The nine month race spans some 37,000 nautical miles, stopping at 11 ports. The spectacular Volvo 70 fleet set sail from Alicante, Spain last October and are due to arrive in St Petersburg, Russia, in late June

Over seven ocean racing teams will arrive in Galway on the 23rd May and the event will be hosted in the city until June 6th.

For Sword, a company which was founded in Galway, winning this prestigious contract to supply security services to the event is not only a great business opportunity but also an honor as the event will have a great economic impact on the region. The Galway stopover is estimated to generate €43 million which is worth such importance to Galway and the west of Ireland.

The contract for supplying security to the fifteen day event, and its estimated 200,000 visitors,  and it will allow Sword security create up to 80 temporary jobs.

Sword was established in Galway and is now the number one supplier of crowd management and event security in Ireland with offices in throughout Ireland and the UK, but the company still prides itself in its Galway roots. Sword supplies its services to the world famous Galway Racing Festival, the 4th largest racing festival in the world and works with many other local businesses.

In order to host this international sporting event, the maritime city will establish a three-acre village to cater for the thousands of visitors who are expected to welcome the fleet on its arrival. Demolition of the Oil Tanks at the Galway Docks is completed and preparation for the transformation of this area as the Volvo Ocean Race Village is underway.
